This position falls under the general direction of the Regional Operations Manager and receives dotted-line guidance from the Director of Regional Logistics. Manage all aspects of the regional transportation network to include territory planning, assignment of drivers and vehicles, usage of equipment, personnel issues and servicing the customer. This position is the RoadNet routing system “expert” for the region and is ultimately responsible for implementation, maintenance and success of the RoadNet system. Individuals in this position would typically manage transportation functions for 12 or more facilities, and over 100 drivers, across multiple divisions.


  • Plan, direct and implement vehicle scheduling, allocation, dispatching, and communication functions in accordance with established policies and objectives to ensure economical utilization of vehicles.

  • Direct compilation and issuance of time tables.

  • Conduct continuous analysis of vehicle and driver assignments and analyze scheduling for possible consolidation.

  • Direct operation and maintenance of communication system, review procedures, provide guidance to resolve technical problems, analyze costs and recommend cost control measures.

  • Ensure best practices and corporate approved safety programs are in place and functioning.

  • Develop route and stop logic and ensure service levels are at or above company expectations.

  • Interface with warehouse operations to ensure best practice trailer loading logic is in place.

  • Reduce regional accident, incident and workers compensation rates through implementation of safety programs and training on proper equipment usage.

  • Ensure DOT compliance.

  • Maintain a frequent dialogue with the corporate Director of Transportation and the corporate Traffic Manager to ensure equipment issues related to specification, size of fleet and innovative technology are communicated and resolved throughout the region.

  • Develop plan-to-actual metrics on cost, service, capacity utilization and other company-defined measurements.

  • Evaluate on a semi-annual basis the entire regional network analysis. Make changes due to business demands.

  • Directly responsible for all Routers, Dispatchers and may manage regional facility Truck Drivers. Has dotted-line authority over Truck Drivers at satellite locations within assigned region.

  • Responsible for hiring, performance reviews and corrective action for direct reports.

  • Ensure training needs are met for Drivers at both regional and satellite locations.

  • Review cost statements to locate excessive expenses and develop plans, policies and budgets to reduce expenditures.

  • Manage the transportation budget and variance reporting.

  • Approval of expenditures of up to $5,000.

  • College degree preferred but not required.

  • Must have working knowledge of DOT Regs.

  • At least 2 years warehouse mgmt experience.

  • 5 years transportation mgmt experience.

  • Literate in basic computer software programs 1 year of computerized routing experience

  • Proven ability to obtain positive measurable desirable results. -

  • Spreadsheet/database literate.

  • Able to manage time effectively under minimal supervision.

  • Excellent communications skills.
